McLaren Flint Receives Additional Blue Distinction Center+ Designation for Quality and Efficiency
The Center's sophisticated technology, state-of-the-art facilities, and groundbreaking procedures and treatment, are giving more and more people higher quality of care.
McLaren's leading heart and vascular program offers advanced diagnostic and treatment options, including minimally invasive cardiac procedures, robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, as well as research. McLaren Flint is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac Care. Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ are also 20 percent more cost-efficient. Additionally, McLaren Flint has a national five star rating for cardiology services.
McLaren Flint has five cardiac catheterization labs that feature advanced technology. One lab is also specialized for electrophysiology studies. In the O.R. two rooms are dedicated to cardiac surgical procedures. McLaren Flint was also the first area hospital to offer a Hybrid Operating Room. This specialized surgical suite offers clinical advantages for both surgeons and patients. The room is equipped to make it possible for surgeons to go from performing a minimally invasive procedure to an open procedure in minutes. It is equipped for use by vascular surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional cardiologists.
The cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at McLaren Flint have achieved many "firsts" in the region, utilizing advanced technology. Most recently, McLaren was the first hospital in the region, and only the third in the state to use an implantable cardiac monitoring (ICM) system called the Reveal LINQ, for a cardiac patient. The device, which is approximately one-third the width of a AAA battery, can also be used for stroke patients. This ICM is used to monitor the health of patients who have had recurrent fainting, heart palpitations, unexplained stroke or an irregular heartbeat. McLaren Flint was also the first hospital in the region to perform multi-vessel off pump coronary artery bypass as well as videoscopic saphenous vein harvesting. McLaren was also a leader in offering minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass and minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. One of our world-renowned cardiac surgeons was the first in the region to perform the MAZE procedure, a surgical option to treat atrial fibrillation. This cardiac surgeon also performed Michigan’s first "awake" coronary artery bypass surgery.
Along with expertise in the cardiac arena, McLaren also excels in vascular care. A nationally renowned group of vascular surgeons offer the latest treatment and technology in the area of vascular surgery to patients at McLaren Flint. This group of vascular surgeons was among a select few in the nation chosen for participation in five different clinical trials involving an advanced carotid stenting procedure. McLaren is the only area hospital working with these surgeons in the implementation of these clinical trials.
Innovations mastered at McLaren's cardiac center of excellence include:
Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB)
Endoscopic vein harvesting
Endovascular stent grafting
Both OPCAB and endoscopic vein harvesting procedures lead to faster recovery, less trauma, and improved quality of life. Endoscopic stent grafting is a minimally-invasive procedure for repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
From the routine to the complex, area residents and their families confidently entrust their heart and vascular health to the highly-experienced and expert team of surgeons, cardiologists and clinicians and McLaren Flint.
